Ivanhoe Photographic Society

General 2009 – 2017

Over this period our club activities have changed very little. The syllabus has competitions, judging nights, presentations by guest speakers, practical nights, an audio-visual competition night, and tuition nights. Outings to the city, gardens, festivals etc., offer the chance to practice our photography, with our more experienced photographers offering advice on camera settings, lenses etc. Our Presentation night each December marks the achievements of our many talented photographers.

Our Easter weekends away are well attended each year.

Our twice monthly newsbrief continues to keep our members up to date with club events and public photographic events of interest.

Social events have changed.  As city ‘Theatre’ visits became more expensive, we decided to support local Heidelberg Theatre productions. However, since 2015 interest in theatre has waned, but over these years Pizza nights continue to be popular and well attended.  Our Cup Eve annual chicken and champagne night is no longer run but, the end of year Christmas BBQ is always enjoyed as it marks the end of each memorable year.

2009

Peter Bellmont was successful in his application for FAPS (Fellow of the Australian Photographic

Society), this time in the digital section.

Since this time there has been a definite decline in members’ interest in achieving such awards. Banyule Council updated and redecorated Hawdon Street Hall, the hall in which we meet, and a new heating/cooling system was installed.  Great improvement, and we no longer shivered through winter meetings.

2010

Duane Eaks resigned after 13 years as President of IPS.  A few of these years he undertook the role as secretary at the same time. He remained on the committee until 2017, becoming secretary again for his last 3 years.

Our generous grant from the Bendigo Bank enabled us to update our equipment and brought us into the modern digital age.

Our club started its FaceBook account.

Exhibitions and Displays

Members displayed their prints in a continuous display at Rosanna Library from 2008 until 2011, at which time they could no longer afford us the space.

An annual display is held in Ivanhoe Library, usually in July.

In August 2011 IPS held its first public exhibition held in its meeting hall in Hawdon Street. Opened by the Hon.  Jenny Macklin, it proved to be an event to be proud of.  Another was held in 2013 but was less successful due, we decided, to a need for considerably more publicity before such an event. In 2012 we held an exhibition at Michaels Camera Store in Elizabeth Street.

In February 2017 IPS was given the wonderful opportunity to exhibit 60 prints in an exhibition held at The Hatch Contemporary Art Space in Ivanhoe.

IPS 60th Anniversary – 24 October 2015

Undoubtedly the highlight of these years, this milestone event was held at the Veneto Club in Bulleen.  It had taken 18 months of preparations, led by Nellina Sebastian and her team, and was a highly successful evening.

The photo book “History and Memoirs of IPS,1995 – 2015”, was published as part of the

commemoration of this event.
